Emergency powers

A short post to remind regular readers that almost certainly the point of Brexit wasn't Brexit itself, but the repatriations of powers to the Executive.

Not from Brussels, but from we the people, in our ability to question what the Executive does.

Restrictions on FoI, Judicial Review, Legal Aid and imposing limitations on what the Supreme Court can and cannot adjudicate on.

The WAB itself gave the Executive, the PM and other Ministers huge powers. The coronavirus means that more emergency powers will be granted; closing or keeping open schools, detaining those infected or suspected of being infected. The power to remove rights on freedom to travel or gather will be taken away; "for our own safety", the test will be as to when and if those rights and others will be returned.

Remember now what freedoms we have for the times when we don't have them, and what we lost.

Power for power sake, and that alone. Everything else is expendable; the economy, tens of thousands of citizen's lives, our freedoms. All will be burned on the pyre to allow Johnson and Cummings to rule unopposed.

Meanwhile, let's try to keep alive.
