An evening constitutional

In the end, it doesn't matter whether a country's constitution is written down or not. Codified or not. Enhrined in law or based on conventions.

THe true test of a constitution is what it does when events, or Government's actions, push it to the limit, or break it.

A functioning constitution reacts to protect democracy, or the country, or Parliament, or whatever.

The UK's constitution is, largely, based on conventions, invented by white chaps to ensure that white chaps of all political hues keep their word and obey conventions because that's what white chaps do: keep their word.

That is now shattered.

Johnson does not believe in conventions. Doesn't believe that rules, and laws, apply to him or his Government.

We only have to look at the things he and his Government has done in the two years in power, would have in times past, have resulted in him resining and an election forced.

Nothing applies to Johnson. Even giving the Monarch unlawful advice, as ruled by the Supreme Court wasn't enough for him or the Leaders of both Houses to consider their position.

Negotiating a WA with the EU, proclaiming it an oven ready deal and being elected on implementing it and it being as shit as warned. Not his fault, its the EU's. Even the man who sat in negotiations and agreed it, David Frost, now disowns the very work he was knighted for as either he is too stupid to have understood what he negotiated or is lying when he says that what the EU is holding the UK to wasn't what was intended.

He proclaims to be doing the "people's will", and so will remain in power until the people realise he isn't.

It might be next week, might be next year, but he will be removed from power.

Meanwhile the constitution is in crisis, it isn't working, and Johson and co revel in its failure to contrain their power and actions. Until we care about that, the country will be in a very bad place.
