Thursday 4th April 2024

I have had an issue with my turntable for some time. As an audiophile, the sound has to be perfect, if not, I can't listen to it.

So, a couple of years back, records began to sound very poor, if not terrible, especially those with higher levels of treble. Heroes by David Bowie and Love Song by Simple Minds are just two that became unplayable.

Ninety five One of the guys who came to lay the carpet said nice things about the system and speakers, so I told him about the sound issue. He identified it as corrosion on the connectors in the input on the amp, which seemed logical.

So I bought some contact cleaner, and although its not perfect, much better than it was.

So, I can play records again!

That apart, Thursday was another normal day, with work, work and yet more work to be done.

Jools slept through her alarm, and I woke up just after six, meaning Jools only just had enough time for coffee, a shower and getting dressed before leaving.

I got up, made coffee and fed the cats, the change probably the cause of confusion among the cats and only two of them demanding to be fed.

Other than work I had just the delayed delivery from the previous day to wait in for.

Would it arrive?

Another day of winds and showers, meaning that that with work meant I did not stray far from the dining room table.

So got on with work.

I know my cans can be repetitive: trust me I know, I actually live them, filling them with I don't know what, but taking all day to get it done.

Anyway. I finish at three, make a brew and sit down to watch Mary Beard on telly talking about Rome. Which I sleep through most of, though Scully is happy with the company and a warm body to snuggle up to.

I make fritters for dinner, which don't take long, I add some leftover chorizo which comes out as yet another triumph.

The deivery arrives at five to seven. The poor driver still had half a van of parcels to drop off, and he explained he didn't come the day before as he got stuck in a field turning round and had to wait for a farmer to pull him out. Poor guy, I thanked him and gave hmim a fiver tip.

And that brought me to another evening listening to football on the radio: Liverpool winning 3-1 against Sheffield Utd, and then Man Utd being the first team in PL history to be leading on 99 minutes and yet still lose. 4-3.

Wednesday 3rd April 2014

We have been thinning out our possessions for the last two weeks, last up is the CDs.

I guess we have got rid of 10%, maybe a few more, but there is now space on the shelves again, rather than stacking new ones on top of other CDs.

Ninety four I was going to take a shot of a delivery I was expecting, so took no shots all day, then the delivery got cancelled at seven in the evening, and was nearly dark..

So this is the best I could do with the remaining light.

Jools should have had the day off, but had to go into the office for a meeting, and ended up being there until after midday. Which meant it was just me and the cats.

There is always work. And there is, apparently, always rain.

Another stormy night with heavy rain, lead to a misty and gloomy morning, and it being too wet to sit out even if the weather did allow it.

Not much to tell of the day. Henrik has travelled to Denver for two weeks of audits, our boss has a family emergency in India, meaning I attended meeting that I had been poorly briefed for.

Sigh.

I couldn't go out, even if I wanted to as I was waiting for this delivery, so I sat with Scully as we listened to music, before I made dinner. Which was Kievs, stir fry and noodles, and more leftover focaccia.

Its a horrible job but someone's gotta do it.

Needless to say there was more football in the evening, so I sat with Scully some more as Citeh rattled in four goals.

On the UK leaving the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR)

Some points/issues.

1. The ECHR is not an EU institution, but set up by European Governments after WWII to protect citizens from their own Governments.

2. The UK cannot leave the ECHR without either breaching or renegotiation the Good Friday Agreement.

3. Leaving the ECHR would be a clear breach of the TCA with the EU.

4. Only Russia and Turkey (after a coup) have left the ECHR. Not good company.

5. Requires primary legislation, of which there is no time to pass before the next election.

6. The various Conservative Governments have been threatening this for a decade, had they really wanted to leave it, they would have. Already.

7. The Supreme Court stated that the ECHR was NOT the reason the flights to Rwamda were stopped. So leaving the ECHR will not change the court's position.

Message ends

Tuesday 2nd April 2024

Tuesday. And back to work after the four and a half day weekend.

All good things must come to an end.

Jools was working all day, so she left just before seven, I set up the office, logged on and found I had no (zero) urgent tasks.

Tulip I made a coffee.

Outside it was a wet morning, but the rain was due to clear soon, which it did, allowing me to go out to snap fresh flowers showing in the garden.

I spent the day stretching and folding focaccia dough, sounds a bit over the top but when the loaf came out as well as it did, it was worth it. As it is, just two or three minutes every half an hour.

Pasqueflower My knee was still sore from the walk in the woods, so no walking done, but its recovery seemed quicker, which I hope. So the lesson is to keep moving, rather than make excuses not to go out.

Fritillaria imperialis Two years ago, I arrived on Rhodes for a week of orchid chasing, which was an amazing experience, of course. My friend is running the trip again this week, and great to see shots taken on social media of locations I knew.

Soon we will be off to Ireland for more orchid chasing, and my UK (and Ireland) orchid adventures will come to an end, unless a new species is found in the years to come.

So, at four I put the bread in to cook, added salt and pepper with rosemary to the top, along with yet more olive oil.

It was glorious.

We ate it with Caprese, which I had seasoned well, and washed down with red wine fresh from the box.

Ninety three Ahem.

And so an evening of listening to football on the wireless and the rain hammering down against the back of the house.

Drip, drip, drop little April showers......

Sunday 1st April 2024

The winter is long and dark, from the moment the clocks go back at the end of October, each day gets shorter and darker by anything from one to five minutes, until just before Christmas, the process stops, and the days begin, almost beyond human senses, to get longer. At first a minute a day, but by the end of March, up to five minutes in the morning and five more in the evening.

By then, Spring is here, just about, there is the colour of fresh growth everywhere, maybe some hardy spring flowers in bloom, and some butterflies and other insects dressed in woolly jumpers, bobble hats and scarves, out collecting nectar.

Salix caprea Through those long, dark winter months, I dream of the first walk in the springtime woods of the Kentish downland, look for signs of flowering orchids and other plants. To make the winter seem longer and darker, I tore my cartilage in my right knee, and pretty much the only cure is not to go out walking in the woods.

Kentish spring I had to get fit for when the time came.

Had to.

Friday. Good Friday was when I went into the woods for the first time, not so muddy as i thought after the rains over the autumn and winter, but plenty of trees down, though the woodland carpeted with anemones and celandines.

The oast house I bailed on a walk on Sunday due to the poor, cloudy weather. There would be no excuse for Monday. Bank Holiday Monday.

So, with cloudless skies forecast for the morning, once we had supped our first coffee, we were out. Heading to Stone Street and the orchid-rich downlands there.

Not many people about, not even at the port as the queues from Friday had melted away, so we cruised up the M20 then up Stone Street, turning off and down the familiar lane to Yockletts.

Adoxa moschatellina Once parked up I put on my walking shoes, crampons, got the walking pole out, all needed these days so to protect my knee from further damage.

And then through the gate and up the track to the lower meadow.

KWT have been busy, clearing shrubs and vegetation. I have long since given up commenting on the work they do, it looks extreme just after completion, and a fellow walker was horrified at what had been done. I hope he's wrong, but much of the lower slopes are now meadow rather than woodland, and the woodland plants are fading away.

Maybe they'll return.

Even the old bench has been replaced. It needed going, but the new one is narrow and uncomfortable, and not good for one who would like to linger. So we press on, down through the woods and then up to the higher track, so to check on the Lady Orchids.

Lady Orchid, Fly Orchids, Greater Butterfly, Herb Paris, Wood Spurge, Surge Laurel, Primroses and many other plants were showing well, with many to flower in the next few days and weeks.

Across the road and up the steep path to the upper meadow, where our way was blocked by signs warning of Ash die back and fallen trees. I did nip along to the edge of the bluebell wood to see if the Early Purples were in flower, sadly they were not, which meant we would have to go somewhere else afterwards.

I told Jools of the change of plan and the short drive to Earley Wood, along the valley, she sighed but accepted it. So, back to the car we walked, where I would drive three miles with crampons on.

The winterbourne whose bed is usually dry for years was two foot deep, and fast flowing, heading to Waltham and Bridge beyond where it would join with the Nailbourne to flow into the Little Stour.

Ninety two We turned left instead, to get to the wood, and a quick hobble down through the pen meadow to the first track, and down where I had been the spikes on Friday, a little further on were two spikes each with a handful of open flowers.

That'll do, pig.

On the way back to the car, Jools spotted a Comma basking, so we both stooped to take shots of it with wings open before the last few steps through the mud in the meadow and arrived safe and sound at the car.

Polygonia c-album I drove us back to the A2, then back along to Whitfield and to home, getting back at half eleven, just enough time to make bacon butties before the football began at half midday.

This is the business end of the season, when the going gets tough, the tough get promoted, and for this Bank Holiday, Norwich were away at once runaway leaders, Leicester.

Norwich were dreadful, and to make it worse, the game was live on TV, which I turned off after 65 minutes, Norwich 2-1 down and chasing shadows. Leicester ran in a third at the end, so that was crap.

At least Ipswich would lose to Southampton, right?

Wrong.

Though for an hour The Blues were chasing shadows too, but made some changes and showed the grit and determination so missing from Norwich, and scored two in the closing stages to win 3-2 and go back to the top of the table.

Next game?

The Old Farm Derby at Carrow Road.

Oh dearie, dearie me.

There was still time to watch Leeds overcome Hull, so that all the top three at the start of play all won.

Sunday 31st March 2024

Easter Sunday.

First day of British Summer Time (BST).

This meant it was darker later in the morning, and the sun not rising until just before seven, so we could lay in bed and snooze.

In fact, I lay in bed until ten to eight, meaning unlike the previous day when I woke at half five and having two and a half hours before Radcliffe and Maconie started. Sunday I had ten minutes.

Ninety one We had planned to go out orchiding, but the expected sunny weather instead turned dark and cloudy, and my knee suggested it wasn't the best thing to do.

So, we didn't go out.

What we did do after breakfast was sort through our DVDs and CDs, thinning out product on the shelves, we're going to donate the unwanted stuff to charity.

Bureau Most of my CDs I dumped were those from the fag end of Britpop and the landfill indie of the first decade of this century. Also going were doubles of stuff I owned.

It came as a surprise to find I had two copies of Back in Black, so kept the remastered version.

The last of the furniture was taken upstairs, and now the old stuff is to be collected by another charity.

This meat that come two in the afternoon Jools could go back to her room to finish her crocheted blanket and be out of earshot of the football that Scully and I watched. Liverpool v Brighton, followed by Citeh v Arse, three goals all afternoon, and Liverpool scored two of them.

Posh chair Somehow it was seven in the evening, we had pizza for supper, sat on the sofa watching Iolo talking about Welsh wildlife.

A good end to the day.

Saturday 30th March 2024

Saturday.

Which I thought was Sunday, which is how I missed the second railtour of the week.

I went to Preston early on having gathered Garlic Mustard, so the boys can make some new sausages.

The roads are at least quiet that time of day. Although the roads to Perry Corner were still part flooded from the recent rain.

Their website said they opened at seven. I was there at ten past, and the lights were off and door locked. But in a few minutes they turned up and the door unlocked.

Ninety I get some steak and pork pies too, just as I was there.

Jools and JP hd the last of the shelving to put together and attach to the wall, he arrived just before nine, after we had eaten breakfast, and so they carried on while I messed around in the kitchen.

They finished just after midday, though there are some parts missing and two shelves extra, other than that, they did a great job. Jools and I could have done it, but it would have taken us all weekend and then some to get it done. JP has the tools and knowledge.

Nearly done So, all of a sudden there was nothing to do, so Jools and I had lunch, then I settled down to listen to the football, and Jools filled the shelves as I snoozed.

And that was the rest of the day, really. Football on the radio or telly box, pork pie and extra spicy Wotsits and beer for supper, and yet more football as Man Utd played Brentford, which ended as a 1-1 draw just before ten.

In the morning it would be summer time, the clocks going forward, so darker, later.

Maybe a lie in.
