On the UK leaving the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR)

Some points/issues.

1. The ECHR is not an EU institution, but set up by European Governments after WWII to protect citizens from their own Governments.

2. The UK cannot leave the ECHR without either breaching or renegotiation the Good Friday Agreement.

3. Leaving the ECHR would be a clear breach of the TCA with the EU.

4. Only Russia and Turkey (after a coup) have left the ECHR. Not good company.

5. Requires primary legislation, of which there is no time to pass before the next election.

6. The various Conservative Governments have been threatening this for a decade, had they really wanted to leave it, they would have. Already.

7. The Supreme Court stated that the ECHR was NOT the reason the flights to Rwamda were stopped. So leaving the ECHR will not change the court's position.
