Bonfire of the regulations

Back in 2020, I attended an online conference hosted by ISO about Brexit, and in it they explained how harmonisation of standards and rules facilitated trade and that Brexit would be one of common sense.

Yeah.

Common sense has been in short supply in the UK for six years now, and and in an attempt to curry favour with the Brexit headbangers, Rishi is saying that he would form a new department to look at decoupling UK law from EU, and Truss announced the replacement of all 3,000 pieces of such legislation.

In a year.

Before we even get to the practical difficulties in replaing or scrapping 3,000 laws, that something is reatined EU law doesn't make it bad. And a few short months ago, even JRM stated that changing standards and laws for the sake of it would be a mistake.

But, apparently, Brexit must be "saved", and so this bollocks.

Laws cannot just be scrapped.

Each has to be analysed and go through due process, even via the quickest method. This is going to take several years.

So, what we can say, as DAG said yesterday, is that Brexit is not done.

If it were, this exercise would not be being planned, this would have already happened. In fact, the Brexiteers would have already identified which laws could be scraped and/or replaced.

And that's before we get to the core point of: red tape, that is regulation, is not in itself, bad.

It keeps us, the people, safe at home, travelling, at work, or when shopping, eating out. And so on and on.

Lax regualtions and their implemtation caused the Grenfall fire, and so scrapping or not forcing compliance to regulations can have deadly consequences.

But also, duplication of regulations for duplication's sake means double te compliance and regulatory cots for companies and for the economy. Also, EU suppliers might not want to be certified for UK compliance, so not bother, thus reducing consumer choice at home.

Sunak and Triss are idiots, but not the biggest idiots on Government or recently departed from Government. But to stand a chance of being elected Leader they have to pander to the base instincts and predujices of their core membership. Anti-EU anti-foreign, and rabid with it.

And then when reality means having to act in a different way, they will be cast as Brexit traitors. THat's what happened to May.

Truss is heading to be leader, and her two years as PM will not be dull.

It will be hilarious.

And if she sticks to shat she has said in her campaign there will be a trade war with the EU, little help with fuel, and a return to fracking, cutting solar power and opening up new gas reserves in the North Sea.

But, as a leader, she is shit.

She does not have the skills to cope with being PM during a Europeans War, Brexit, cost of living crisis and a possible general strike.

Oh God, its going to hurt.

Many will die.

And then there is always COVID in the background, and she has said she will not bring back lockdowns.

Oh, deep joy.
