On Friday, the PM stood down as leader of the Conservative (and Union) Party, but will stay on until her replacement is selected.
Only, its not that simple.
The new Tory leader must be able to command a majority in Parliament for the Queen to invite the leader to be PM. If the new leader cannot lead in Parliament, then it will be up to the opposition to see if they could command a majority. If not, an election will follow.
And May cannot stop being PM until the above comes to pass. Meaning she will be PM until the end of July, maybe longer. Much longer.
So we could have a separate leader of the Conservatives and PM.
Constitutional crisis anyone?
Or how about the Queen having to decide if the nominated leader could or could not command a majority?
Another constitutional crisis?
And this is before the dreadful bunch of those wanting to be Tory leader.
Summer will be fun. And remember, the EU said not to waste this extension......
