As the UK prepares for Christmas, depending on which tier we are in, COVID doesn't rest.
Yesterday, the similar South African strain was detected in the UK, just two cases, but this has prompted a total travel ban from/through South Africa.
All of the South East and East Anglia will be in tier 4 from 00:01 on Boxing Day, meaning that the family bubbles in areas currently in tiers 2 and 3 can go ahead tomorrow, superspreading through the opening of presents and Christmas dinner, because that is the magic of Christmas, apparently. Its the giving and not the receiving.
So in Sussex, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire we can expect to see a spike in infections in a couple of weeks, hospitalisations in a month and death in six weeks, but we'll always have that last Christmas with Granny, won't we?
To put this in perspective, yesterday, 23rd, saw 39, 237 new infections and 744 deaths, the highest since April. And still the numbers in both are accelerating.
We formed a family bubble with Jen at the beginning of November, so she is coming round this today for two days, and will probably come New Year's Eve too.
So we are going to stay safe, will you?
