The year in Brexit

This really is it. The last one.

Just now, Parliament voted on the second reading of the Bill passing the EU Trade Deal.

The battle is lost. We have Brexit.

However.

This is just the beginning.

The deal is a huge win for the EU, Johnson like he always does, caved in at the last minute and pretty much accepted the EU's terms. That Ministers and the ERG ined up to support the deal, just as they did with the WA last year, only to repent in a few months and declare it the worst deal in history.

The only question is, how long will it be before the ERG and Brexiteers read and realise what the Trade Agreement contains, and how its terms restrict the UK's scope for what it wrongly called sovereignty.

Two months?

Six Months?

Two weeks?

Any could be right, but they will hate it, and break the terms in in any of its many parts, and the whole trade part, or transport or data comes crashing down. If the UK diverges on standards, there will be tariffs, Johnson had the brass bollocks to deny this in the Commons today, but it is true. This and so much, much more in in the EU's favour, even fishing is. Johnson secured a 25% increase, but that was less than it wanted. And if after six years it tries to stop EU boats from fishing, then UK's fish would have huge tariffs slapped on them, making it impossible to sell.

What a win!

But, a moment of hope.

This is a start, a platform on which to build a new relationship with the EU. Pressure will be from UK industry and business for harmonisation, not divergance, trade requires common standards, and once Brexit and reality inhabit the same space, reality will win out. Brexit has happened, but placed the UK in a straight jacket, once that all Brexiteers are too dumb to get out of, if they did, trade with the EU would stop.

What a win.

This is the most Brexity Government possible, even they stared into no deal and baulked. Future Governments will be more reasonable and there will be a softening of attitudes. But the damage done by May and Johnson and the Brexiteers will not be forgotten in Europe, the abandoning of the dream of a politically united Europe, and sugguested by the left wing firebrand, Winston Churchill in 1945.

And remember what I have always siad, that Brexit has been an exercise in the Executive clawing control back, not from the EU, but from Parliament. The enabling bill gives Ministers huge range of powers, Parliament have literally voted to castrate themselves, it will be very difficult to get them back. 5 hours to debate the Trade deal and the Bill, not to reject or accept, no ammendments, nothing. It is a sham of democracy. I warned you, and look where we are.

Nothing can change now.

It will take time, but we will be European again, amybe only by association membership, and we will be rule takers becasue, we cannot be trusted to do that kind of serious stuff ourselves.

I hate Brexit, I hate what it says about my country, I hate the racist shit that some Brexiteers spew, I hate that we cannot live, work and travel in Europe any more, not without visas. But that will change. I give it five years.

To everyone who vted to Leave, or voted for May or Johnson, let me end by saying FUCK YOU ALL.

This is the Jelltex Brexit blog signing off.

Happy New Year.
