It has been said for some time, in different situations, that it would be better for the UK if it had a written constitution.
Like the US, for example.
In fact, the UK does have a written constitution, but it isn't in one place, like the US Declaration.
So, because the US has a written and codified consttution, bad things cannot happen there.
Ahem.
For the past four years, Trump has been trashing the constition, ignoring conventions, and generally doing what the fuck he wants.
And, as pointed out above, the US has a written and codified constitution. It didn't help much.
To have a codified consitution and for it to be effective in checks and balances, people, all people, need to care.
Need to care that it is being followed and care more when it is not.
Even with the 45th President ignoring areas of the consitution he did not like, his supports cheered him on, because they believed he was on "their" side, and Police were mostly only murdering black people, and no kind of protest was tolerated. White privilige was hard wired into the economy and society, with the American Dream really open to those with rich parents, otherwise it was a life of paying of student debt and medical insurance.
Our Prime Minister has ignored the law, ignored convention, been shown to lie and in two deals with the EU folded when he blinked first. And yet people don't care.
The Home Secretary rails again goody-liberal lawyers stopping deportations, when all they are trying to do is get the government to obey the very laws they wrote. And the people, the media don't care, they cheer Priti Nasty on.
Until we care about the law, convention, and those in power being held to the same standards most of us are in our lives and at work, then the world, our countries will not change.
It can't happen here, news anchors across America have said for years. It did.
And it could here too, we have people using the same playbook, backed by the very same people who want to remove our rights and have us as worker ants while they live in their guilded palaces.
