Tuesday fallout

It is difficult to say what the outcome of the first day of the two day debate of the return of the Withdrawal Bill, in that most of the HoL's amendments were voted down with no discussion, no debate, and the "meaningful vote" one was defeated only after open session discussions in the House between the Government and Dominic Grieve, only after a meeting with the PM did he and 16 other "rebels" agree to vote in line with the Government and strike down the HoL's amendment.

Only, what the "rebels" think was agreed and what Number 10 and the DExEU thought was agreed is two different things.

However, a revised version of the amendment will be sent back to the HoL, which will then either accept it or not.It will then be sent back to the HoC, hope you're following this, for a vote, where the rebels could re-insert their amendment if they so whish, which will happen as soon as next week.

But through Brexit, the HoC has fought hard to to exert its own supremacy and despite being given the right to take control by the "people's challenge" funded by Gina Miller and crowdfunded by me among thousands of others, the Commons decided not to use that power and roll over to allow the Government to do as it wished. As happened again yesterday.

It is a poor day for democracy when MPs conduct such a dereliction of the duty, hiding behind the lie of "the will of the people", when it was them that made the referendum only advisory meaning that Parliament would have the choice of whether to act on that at all.

All they have done is allowed a major power grab by the executive, a grab that will be used by Ministers to sweep away decades of accumulated rights, and done without recourse.

All of this is largely irrelevant as whatever May and the Brexiteers decide to do, then they have to get the EU to agree, as well as their own party and DUP. Nothing is changed, other than Parliament absolving itself to step in and take control, instructing the Government what to do, either putting Brexit day back or cancelling it.

That might come back next week in light of statements by DExEU yesterday denying any such amendments to the HoL's amendments would be done, just thought about.

In other news, General Aviation Manufacturers Association & ADS have written to Barnier requesting that European Aviation Safety Agency and UK Civil Aviation Authority begin technical & contingency planning discussions by June’s European Council, separately from political negotiations. Meaning the aviation industry has lost faith on the negotiations, and are now firefighting in hope of keeping planes in the air, and a robust and approved inspection and certification system is needed to be up and running in nine months, and approved by the rest of the world's aviation organisations. But then I'm sure the Brexiteers have thought of that.

And the Head of the CBI said today that the automotive industry faces extinction without a CU with the EU. But again, I'm sure the Brexiteers have this covered, or that the House of Commons is happy that this is covered as they voted to allow May to continue with her wonderful planned Brexit.
