Leaving the Union

Scotland and now Northern Ireland's devolved institutions have voted against Johnson's WA, and Wales is likely to vote against it tomorrow.

Johnson has said the votes will be ignored, yet the legislation saying their consent is needed.

Ignoring it isn't illegal, but it strongly going against the Sewell Convention.

England forcing the smaller nations out of the EU against their will, is exactly the kind of bullying Brexiteers accuse the the EU of. But because loveable Johnson is doing, that makes it all OK.

This strengthens the SNP's already strong hand, and after being the major party in ten consecutive elections, and if that doesn't form a mandate, then I don't know what does. But of course, it was the broken promises of the last Indyref that rankles. There will now be a legal battle between the Scottish and UK Parlimants to see if Scotland can force a second referendum.

Ireland is clearer. The GFA states that if it appears there is a majority for Irish unification, then there should be a simple vote; yes/no.

To leave one union might be seen as unfortunate, to leave two might be seen as stupid.

This will run and run, but some of the powers needed to make Brexit work are devolved, this could get messy.....
