Sunday 17th July 2022

Last day of "normal" temperatures for a couple of days, with temperatures expected to skyrocket from Monday. Even then Sunday was going to be warm enough to hunker down.

So, after the first coffee of the morning, we went out for a walk.

OK, not as early as I wanted, but it took time to get our act together, but at quarter to eight we set off, across the field at the end of the street, but already there was some strength in the sun.

Over the field and past Fleet House, where our friend who lives there has brain cancer, so that explains why there are no pigs in the copse. I hope he pulls through, obviously.

Down the slope past the farm, then up the hill towards Winday Ridge, pausing to stop at the bench, which is now bedecked with the dedication of the farmer, whose field the bench sits, is in rememberance of.

One hundred and ninety eight Then back down the slop and along between the horse paddocks. At least there were more butterflies about this time, which is something of a relief. And even better, over a dozen Common Blues flitting about among the Gatekeepers.

It was a relief to get to the far end and turn for home, walkin past the Toadflax back to Collingwood and back home.

Polyommatus icarus It was ten. And hot.

I made coffee and warmed croissants up, and that was it for my tasks of the day.

We had been invisted to Jen's for lunch. I thought she'd not cook roast on such a hot day, but as she explained when she lived in Austalia, they used to cook roast turkey at Christmas at the height of their summer.

So, we had roast pork and all the trimmings. Which did go down very well indeed. Even if it was very, very warm.

We then played cards, as John had insisted. As ever with five of us, it took nearly two hours, and then John wanted a round of Queenie too. We reach a compromise to have the pot resting on a run of three rather than four.

That lasted only for hands, so John was still happy to scoop the lot.

We made good our escape, which by then was six in the evening.

We had a coffee and an ice cream, then get our stuff ready for the week ahead, not that we really wanted to.

It was still hot at nine when the sun went down, so sleep would be hard to come by.
