The chaos

It took the PM nearly two years to get an agreement in her Cabinet as to what Brexit means. It has taken 10 days for the unravel.

This evening, Number 10 announced it was accepting all of the ERG's four amendments, meaning that the backstop agreed with the EU in December would be against the law.

Further, it now shows that the EU cannot be sure that any agreement reached with the UK Government will be honoured in Parliament, and may decide there is no point in talking to the UK any more, and just prepare for the cliff edge in nine months. As with out a Withdrawal Agreement, there can be no transition deal, and without an all party agreed solution to the NI/Irish border there can be no WA. It all stops.

But this means that a group of 60 or so right wing MPs have hijacked their party and the country and are screaming with joy as they drive the UK economy, manufacturing and service industry over the cliff.

May now faces the prospect that remainer MPs will force their own amendment, such as forcing the UK to stay in a CU.

It is bonkers, and was always going to end this way, with either a no deal Brexit or a Brexit so soft you wouldn't notice it.

A poll released today said that the public wanted a no deal more than a bad deal, but as no one, least of all the Government or Brexiteers explained as to what the cost of a no deal would be. Tis is not democracy, this is a ideological coup.
