Express Yourself

The Daily Express headline this morning is: “New battle to free UK from EU shackles.”

Senior Brexiteers blah, blah blah. And so on.

Thing is, if the UK wants to trade with the EU, then we will have to deal with it, and comply with all their regulations that the EU27 decide upn and vote for, just like the UK did when it was a member state.

And there has to be an arbitration mechanism, the UCJ is one such mechanism, and when pressed Brexiteers struggle to name one ruling that went against the UK to make them thus vexed. It is just the fact it is an institution of the EU.

We could be free of the EU if we decided, as a country, we will not trade with the EU either in goods or services ever again. But the EU is a trading bloc containing half a billion of the wealthiest consumers on the planet, at its nearest point (to Chez Jelltex) it is just 23 miles away.

There are no special privileges that a former member is bestowed with, once an ex member state, it simply becomes a 3rd country to the EU and has to follow the rules any other such country does. This is either Brexit 101 or the international rules based trading system 101, that would have though Brexiteers would have understood, what with some of them banging on about this for two decades or more.

But they like nothing better than to scream betrayal at whatever they think is unfair, and the very thing they voted for or ratified when passing Brexit. This is what comes with Brexit. Additional compliance requirements, meaning additional costs of the UK reintroduces the Kite Mark, or Shite Mark as Brexit will brand it, as well as EU regulations so be able to display the CE marking. Additional red tape as the UK is out of the SM and CU. Additional delays for this, and additional costs born out of the delays. And because of the delays, manufacturers will have to hold additional stock, using up more capital, needing warehouse space, and warehousing staff. All needless additional costs that that £350 million a week pays for.

All was predictable, and was predicted. By legal and trade experts.

If the EU is so bad, then why do Brexiteers want to get a deal to trade with it? Some now say they don’t, but know too that will lead to massive job losses and some industries closing down. So, always better to whine like a bitch, as it is all they have ever done.

And as for the WA.

Brexiteers either didn’t read or understand it when they ratified it in December last year, or they did read and/or understand it, but ratified it with the intention of breaking the terms later. Either way a major failure, and in the latter the very Bad Faith they are all to happy to accuse the EU of.
