The nuclear option

On Friday, the FT lead with a report that the Ministry of Defence has been planning what to do with the nuclear submarines and polaris missiles in the event of Scotland voting for independence.

Brexit makes that more likely.

This is a rehash of something done about a deciade and a half ag, so should surprise no one, other than a Government Ministry actually planning ahead(!)

The options are:

1. Relocate the submarines and missles to a third country, like France.

2. Movem them all to Devonport. Only that's near to major shipping lanes and the continental shelf makes early submerging impossible and tracking by Russia and Cina easier.

3. Negotiate an area of British terriotory in Scotland, rather like Gibraltar or Guantanamo Bay. One of the problems being that the SNP is anto-nuclear.

The MOD Twitter account was quite put out at the leak and asserted that both missles and submarines would remain in Scotland. So, choice (3) then?

Another Brexit benfit, apparently.
