At the beginning of the week, the Daily Mail suggested that if the Tories lost over 300 seats it would be a disaster for them.
The result showed the Conservatives lost nearly 500, but this was painted by the Mail, Express and BBC as better than expected.
Hello.
Places like Mairfair and Westminster went over to Labour, as well as several other councils around the country. The LibDems did better, as did the Greens, but it was no disaster for Labour, and yet the message was it has "stalled" outside London.
Johnson failed to take any message from this, and coupled with Durham Police opening investigations into Starmer's curry, allowed Conservative Central Office to focus on that rather than the election results. Quite how Durham Police were persuaded to change their stance on looking into "partygate" is a question yet to be answered, but allowed The Sun and Mail to paint Starmer as a hyprocrit, despite the laws and guidance being different when the "offence" was supposed to have occurred.
It all stinks to be honest, but we shall see.
As it stands, even the "exposive" new evidence, when looked at in accorance with regulations in force at the time, looks weak to say the least.
So we have gone from theMet refusing to look into gatherins in and around Downing Street only with the threat of legal action, but six days of Mail front pages and they buckle.
Hmmmm.
