Brexit and the election

I have not written much about Brexit this week, because, well, it has really leapt into fairy tale land, with Labour saying they would like to nationalise broadband and make it free, and the Tories saying they would provide £500 million to reopen railways across the country.

Thing is, most Beeching closures can't be reopened because of building on the alignments, and anyway, £500 million would bring less than 30 miles back into service at the current cost of such work Network Rail charges.

And this is pretty much the level of debate; not debate, but both sides trying to outdo each other in unaffordable, uncosted election promises.

At least Labour can say they're not in power so don't have financial forecasts to accurately price things. Tories are literally making shit up, but the papers are falling for it, as are the BBC. So, almost unlimited spending promised by both sides, and yet any form of Brexit will bring in less tax revenue, so meaning either less spending or higher taxes.

But lower taxes have been promised too.

I am looking forward to political debate returning to Planet Earth, but not expecting it anytime soon.
