The plunging pound and the continuing climate of fear

As the PM was Home Secretary under Cameron, she introduced the "climate of fear", under which it made life very uncomfortable for anyone not white, even if they were living here legally.

As we found out earlier this year, many of those, and their families, of the Windrush generation are now being targeted for deportation, after the Home Office destroyed the paperwork that proved they had citizenship.

We now hear that many acts who were going to perform at WOMAD were either denied visas or were put of by the onerous visa application process that had been brought in. And news came this week that many authors for the Edinburgh Literary Festival were denied entry to the country by the Home Office. No wonder the EU are concerned that UK might go back on assurances regarding EU citizens post Brexit.

The pound continues to fall, meaning that English clubs, over the summer transfer window, have had to pay over £80 million more for players because their pounds are now worth less in Euros.

This is a minor thing, but for the rest of us, energy is all priced in dollars, so the UK/US exchange rate will determine how much bills increase, some providers have already increased prices because of the increase in wholesale prices, which is in dollars, of course. And everything that uses energy, will also have to increase prices to compensate for the additional costs they are paying. Or packs of good will get smaller. So, of course, your holidays, and saved spending money will go less as far, so that'll be tightening of the belts all round.

Today, the Express leads with a story that the EU might be willing to compromise and "blink first". In the 17 months since the A50 letter was sent, all movement has been by the UK, sometimes by not understanding what they have agreed to. But any movement in relation to a post-Brexit UK, a 3rd party country, would have to apply to all 3rd party countries, so the idea that any of the four freedoms being relaxed is just more cakeism.
