Monday Brexit

In today’s Brexit news in Lalaland, the PM is forming a working group looking into alternative arrangements for the backstop.

The UK leaves the EU next month.

The EU says it will not reopen the WA.

Ireland has said, today, it will be rejecting anything outside the WA agreements.

So, May is trying to get a party together for formulate a plan that the EU and Ireland have already rejected, and UK negotiators spent two years trying to get round. But still, I’m sure it won’t be like Blackadder trying to write a dictionary in one night.

Oh no.

Nissan has confirmed it won’t be building the X trail in Sunderland, I made a mistake, its not electric but diesel. The UK, it turned out, to provide £65 million in breaks to the company if two models were built there, so will try to recover the money. But, and I’m only guessing here, the UK made promises that trade and supply chains would be uninterrupted in Brexit. Though that’s not quite how it’s turning out.

Good luck with that.

And the big plan in order to avoid queues at ports is to waive trucks through without checks. This is all well and good, but will only help traffic coming from France, as it is certain that the EU would impose checks as it is WTO rules for them to do so, unless the drop checks from freight from all WTO members.

The UK hopes that companies will file a simplified declaration and pay tax at a later date. Not that this will encourage smuggling. Oh no.
