I guess, one of the most frustrating things about Brexit, is how often I have to say the same thing, over and over again, as though the Breiteers pretended not to hear first, or second, or third time round.
The backstop is a case in point. I mean, in the joint statement 14 months ago, the government, DUP and Parliament waved it through. Thing is the backstop would not kick in until 2021 and only if nothing else worked.
So the Brexiteers beef about it boils down to them realising that Max Fac and the fabled technological solutions are more than two and a half years away, and May and her brave band of Brexiteers are saying, in public, it can be made to work in the next six weeks.
Not
Going
To
Happen.
And even then the EU and Ireland would have to agree.
Another repeated argument by Brexiteers relates to Michael Barnier, and the fact he is unbending. And May's failed attempts to bypass the EU's lead negotiator. But he was given a mandate by the EU27 and Council. He reports back to them and receives briefings on how to proceed.
That the UK fails to understand this, and apparently doesn't do negotiations in the same way is telling. Whoever is Minister for Brexit doesn't negotiate on a mandate, as Cabinet, Parliament or the country cannot decide what that position is, and so here we are, 47 days from Brexit and that statement is still true.
Brexit was never a good idea, but the way May carried it out ensured its failure. And her failure will be ours.
Sadly.
