Cause and effect

News bulletins were full of little else other than the Euro semi-fial featuring England, but the BBC news at half eight did end on the story that Transport Minister, Grant Shapps, had extended the HGV driver's working day by an hour, from nine to ten, to deal with a shortage of drivers measures in high five figure numbers.

What wasn't said was what the cause was, or might have been.

The cause is the fleeing of EU drivers, who left the UK when it became clear the country, the Brexit supporting one and the UK Government, didn't want them here.

This was warned when it was decided that Brexit meant leaving the SM, CU and ending freemovement of labour, but they went ahead anyway, either not hearing or not caring.

The reality was just to get Brexit done, to quote Johnson, and work the details and consequences later, not realising that an international treaty once signed cannot easily be reopened.

The upshot is, this is the first time really a reguation has been changed that will make our roads less safe, and will threaten other drivers with the possibility, probability of more accidents caused by tired commercial drivers.

Maybe if they think of Brexit as they drive, the purity of thought will keep them awake?
