When you boil it down to the most basic point, Brexit was wanting the UK to be treated as a third country in relation to the EU.
Not that those pushing for it, understood the consequences, they thought that ending free movement would only be stopped for those wanting to come to the UK.
It was pointed out at the time, that limiting freedom of movement of EU citizens would be returned in kind by the EU, and that UK citizens wouldn't be able to use the "e-gates", need visas and so on.
Someone travelling through Amsterdam last year before the pandemic tweeted pictures of clues at immigration with the text: "this isn't the Brexit I voted for." It might not be what he voted for, but its what Brexit meant.
In fact travel, visa requirements for the EU for third countries were discussed and developed from 2008, and the UK was central to that, so it should come as no surprise to find that visas are needed to work, or that you can only live in an EU country for three months at a time unless you pass naturlaisation tests and so on. And now it seems that the EU is introducing similar electronic travels systems, like the US, and means that UK citizens will have to apply and pay £7 for this, although it will last three year.
This is being painted, by some who should know better, as the EU being vindictive, punishment for Brexit, but this is only required because of Brexit, which was denied at the time that would happen.
As usual, the UK wants to be a third country, but treated as though it was astill a member state.
So, every predicted consequence of Brexit, denied by Brexiteers, that now comes true, can be painted as punishment by the EU, thus "proving" that the UK was right to leave such a vindictive and bullying organisation.
But a long way from the claim that the UK held all the cards. They need us more than we need them.
Meanwhile the Road Haulage Association predicts that supply chains are two or three weeks from collapse, as real shortages in many areas of the country are now being reported.
This despite the claim, back in the day, by Brxiteers that they guarantee that there would be no shortages in shops due to Brexit.
