Late last night, the Trade Secretay, Liz Truss, Tweeted that she had made former all round cricketer, cirrent broadcaster and newly installed member of the House of Lords, (Lord) Sir Ian Botham, trade envoy for the UK in Australia.
In these times of parody and parody Twitter accounts, it is increasingly difficult to work out what is real and what is not.
(Lord) Sir Ian Botham was/is a keen Brexiteer.
I have read his autobiography Ighost-written), and he is nice enough, knows a lot about cricket, but nothing about business or trade. He lost a fortune in a garish clothing line back in the 80s.
I have nothing against (Lord) Sir Ian Botham, but if we want to be serious about trade, then we should appoint serious trade envoys, not someone who has boasted he could now run his wine import business billing the taxpayer for his travel costs.
How can the UK be expected to be treated seriously when it does shit like this?
But then I remember that Boris Johnson is Prime Minister. Dominic Raab is Foreign Secretary.
