Labour pains

Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the labour Party, Keir Starmer has come under fire for rejecting calls to rejoin the EU.

Instead, he said, Labour would make "Brexit work".

As much as it pains this remoaner to say so, this is the right course of action.

Brexit has happened and will not be reversed for many years, several Parliaments, if at all.

The first act is to repair trading relations with the EU. These are our closest and largest trading partners. Vote Leave liked to say that we are leaving the EU not Europe, and yet almost all their focus since gaining power is deals with anyone except the EU, and the one they do have they are trying to either undermine or scrap.

Those who voted for Brexit were mostly of the older generation, and although this doesn't sound too nice, many will pass away in the next two decades I myself probably will. Already there is a majority in most age groups to either rejoin or have a closer relationsship with the EU, that will likely harden over the years.

Even if there were to be a Labour Government, and steps forward could be undone after following elctions putting Conservatives in power, so any agreements made between a Labour Government and the EU could come under threat.

There would have to be a political agreement in both main parties that either closer links in trade and other standards, or rejoining the EU, could such a thing become possible.

And then there is the EU.

The UK has been a disruptive member since joining, being a member and yet wanting opt-outs.

On top of that there is way in which the Governments of May and JOhnson have destroyed the EU's trust in anything the UK says. This would have to be repaired, and rebuilding of trust lost in such a way will take a political generation to recover, if it can.

It is a kick in the teeth to hear Starmer say these things, but he's right. And also any indication of a desire to rejoin wuld give Johnson or the Tories a chance to reopen the Brexit culture war, something Johnson is always wanting to do, and almost any critisism of Johnson or the Government is linked to being a remoaner.

Johnson will be deposed or resign at some point, he will be painted a a remoaner, just as May was before.

Brexit will eat itself and everyone associated with it.
