Virus and Brexit

The Government's plan, as it is, is to let the coronavirus infect up to 60% of the UK population in the hope it creates some kind of herd immunity, thus preventing a second wave (!) next winter.

The problem with this is the numbers, ballpark, this means something like 44,500,000 people infected, and with a 2% mortality rate, 850,000 will not survive.

Think about that.

This is not on medical advice, but on the advice of Downing Street's "Nudge" team is not based on medical advice but on Behavioural Science, and is saying that it would be impossible to "lock down" the UK for the dozen or so weeks needed, so they're not going to try.

Today, the WHO sated that the UK's actions regarding the virus is wrong.

Odd that Johnson and Gove are willing to listen to "experts" on the coronavirus but not on Brexit.

As I posted the other day, the current mortaility rate in Italy, or last time I saw it, it was 3.$% which ups the fatalities to 1.5 million or so on the UK, many who will have died un-necessarily. Johnson will have to explain that!

Let me be clear, in some instances, there is no right or wrong decision, just have to make one, like in Star Trek's Kobayashi Maru scenario, where the point it to make a potential officer make a choice both with bad outcomes. But this need not be the case, figures today from South Korea show that their actions have sent the outbreak into remission, far quicker than in China, so it can be beaten and hundreds of thousands need not die.

But once again, this Government of spivs and chancers do not flinch when tens of thousands die for political dogma.

All areas of life will be affected by the virus, including Brexit and those who have to execute it. The UK is going to have to negotiate the future arrangement, deal with the virus and negotiate with dozens of other countries , all at the same time. It is simply impossible. Even if the UK knew what it wanted, though it seems Johnson wants the hardest of Brexits possible, bugger the consequences.

Yesterday, Johnson carried out a press conference in which he said, something along the lines of, I'll level with you, many people will lose their love ones. And refused to instigate harsher restrictions. As the evening went on, news came of more and more footballers infected or suspected of being infected, more and more games being cancelled until it became clear the season would have to be suspended.

And yet Rugby League is going to continue, as did the Cheltenham Festival today. Maybe the horsey set of group immunity?

Schools are to remain open, and yet Parliament is restricting access to the public. The Daily Mail in public praises Johnson, yet in internal e mails decry the lack of action and warns its staff. The Government and media are playing Russian Roulette with us, and with each day that passes without serious restrictions being imposed, more people will be infected and more people will die.
