The punishment

There is a thought that the referendum was carried out by the electorate as a protest against the state of the country, where "remain" could only offer more of the same.

So, that and being told that a vote for "leave" had no downsides, they voted toleave.

Eight years on,it seems the electorate is about to vote its disatisfaction with those who delivered Brexit, Partygate, destroying the NHS, billions wasted on dodgy PPE, Test and Trace, Justice collapsing, rampaging inflation, galloping house proces, social and local services collapsing, sewage in rivers, lakes and the sea. In short, nothing works, the promises of Brexit and levelling up have been broken.

There are strong signs that many will vote for whoever will oust the sitting Tory, even Ministers and the Prime Minister could lose their seat, and deliver Labour a landslide.

Though UK Constitution cannot deliver something called a "supermajority", 30 or 300 seat majority, the more seats does not give the Government more powers. A Labour Government with 200, 300 or 400 seats could drive though policies in its manifesto, and deliver bills turned into legislation. But, history tells us that large majorities are hard to manage with the Whips, and the Conservatives have found out that the power of the Whips is waning, at least in their party.

The current Government have changed boundaries to their advantage, introduced vote ID to surpress votes and called the election in the University summer holidays to supress the student vote in University town, ans they think the young are more likely to vote Labour, Green, but not Tory.

We shall see.

Thoughts go back to the night of the 1997 election, and scenes like when Portillo was defeated live on TV, and hope that many arrogant and cruel Ministers will suffer the same fate in 2024.

Every vote counts.
