The Government we deserve

On Sunday, the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, took part in a number of interviews with BBC local TV, for them to be embargoed until midday on Monday.

In the interviews she defended the scrapping of the 45% top rate tax.

Only for it to be abandoned by breakfast the next morning, meaning that by the time the BBC local TV stations could use the interviews, the main policy had been scrapped.

So, this is the kind of Government we have.

Its pretty much the same Government we have had for 12 years, one that likes to make grand, but broad policy announcements, but is more than lacking in detail in how to get these done.

Here were are, with Truss saying her policies are: growth, growth and, er, growth.

But apart from cutting taxes, which doesn't work, there is no plan.

A plan that would work would be to rejoin the SM and/or the CU.

Instead she has come up with Great British GDPR rules, which will put yet more barriers to trade between Brtain the the EU.

Genius, she aint.

All her tax cuts are uncosted still. Number 10 said that the medium term analysis from the OBR would be released a month early, before the end of October. This was news, apparently, to her Chancellor, who said it would be released as planned in November.

Their conference, held in Birmingham, has been a disaster, with Ministers disagreeing with each other and policy. It's like the once great party is falling to pieces in front of our eyes.

Which I hope it is.

Meanwhile, Labour has managed to extend its lead in the polls. Its getting to the point its unclear whether any Cabinet Ministers would vote for Truss.

Things is, there are just a mximum of 27 months before the next election, and many MPs are now thinking of themselves, and see Truss as just a vote-loser, and will be emboldened to vote against the Government if they think it hurts their chances of relection. Therefore, despite having a 70 seat majority, this Government is more like one for a hung Parliament, with the Prime Minister unable to pass all but the most sensible legislation.

Instead, Truss is trying to reopen culture wars, at a time when people are worrying about cost of living or making the mortgage payments.
