Saturday 8th May 2021

Unusually for May, we had gales and driving rain.

Which will do the garden good, but at a weekend?

FFS.

Which meant there was little chance of doing much for the day, as from half twelve I would be watching footy, with the first act, Norwich concluding their season and getting presented with the old trophy.

Again.

Beyond that, there was football or would be football, with choices of the Prem of League 2, and then a dress rehersal for the Champions League Final by two of the teams who three weekends ago wanted to destroy the competition and start their own.

And when I did get up, it was already raining, and the rain got harder and the clouds darker and thicker.

I put the radio and heating on. But from that evening, the wind would swing to the south and the threat of frosts should be over until the autumn.

Jools made coffee.

I put the croissants in to warm and made second coffee.

The rain came down harder.

To break up the morning, I made a batch of short cakes, which always go down well, and being made of butter now, rather than lard as when my Nan used to make them, and light and delicious.

Norfolk Short Cakes The rain stops, and so Jools says she was going to Ashford with Jen, leaving me home alone to watch the climax of the season, although we have been promoted for at least three weeks, champions since last weekend, and certanties for promotion since March, really.

I pay my tenner to watch on iFollow, and have the Radio Norfolk soundtrack. Its a good game, and Barnsley give us a good game, taking the lead, we pull one back before half time. It ends 2-2, and there is then the odd spectacle of a table laden with medals just for the matchday squad and the trophy. Players line up to pick up their medal, then go behind a hoarding ready to have the end of season shots, once the final player, captain Grant Hanley picks up the trophy.

One hundred and twenty eight It is glorious. And sad, as there are no fans to witness it. Photographs are taken, champagne is drunk and sprayed over each other.

Job done.

I try to watch the Palace game after that, away at Sheffield Utd. It ends 0-2, as the Blades edge nearer to the inevitable relegation, but its not 100% certain. Yet.

THen there is the "big" game, Citeh v Chelski, if Citeh win, they would become champions. They lead 1-0 early on, miss a penalty, then Chelski level. Citeh miss countless chances in the scond half, but are done in injury time.

Crowning of them as Champions will have to wait.

There is yet more football after that, Liverpool v Southampton. But I'm footballed out.

I go to bed at half time, with a full day's orchiding planned for Sunday.
