No cross party deal

So, today the Labour leader, comrade Corbyn announced that the talks with the Government on breaking the Brexit impasse were being abandoned.

This should surprise no one, in that if Labour had supported Brexit, it would be partly to blame for when it all goes Pete Tong. As it is, the failure of the talks is being put on Corbyn by May, who let us not forget, never compromises at all.

So, that;s four weeks of "talks" that were a waste of time, and pointless from the moment they were announced.

May's last throw of the dice is to get the WAB, Withdrawal Agreement Bill, as its now referred to, through Parliament. It puts the WA itself into UK law. This is a bill that May, the Cabinet and Government and DUP had already accepted. Now no one does.

The WAB can be amended, and probably will be. But if the amendments run contrary to the WA itself between the UK and EU, then it would not be accepted by the EU.

This is the tactic that all comers in the Tory leadership campaign will run on. And all will be OK until the new PM asks to renegotiate with backstop, citing the backing of the Parliamentary Conservative Party as their mandate.

The EU will say "non".

And the UK and Government will be back to where we are now.

And in any case, numbers in the Commons and Lords will not change. No deal has no chance of being passed, either by legislation or by "accident" in letting the clock run out on October 31st. Parliament can take control of the daily orders and block no deal in very short order, if it seems there is no other way.

Which will bring us to the inevitable conclusion that either way, an election is needed, a General Election, and a further extension would be needed to hold one if one were needed once we get into September.

There is no guarantee that the EU would accept such an extension.
