Germany 1 Johnson 0

Yesterday, our erstwhile Prime Minister, Johnson, went to Berlin to visit the German Chancellor.

Before their meeting, there was a photo op, and questions from the press, and in a reply Merkel mentioned a 30 day period in which to sort something out.

And indeed, Number 10 spun this to mean that she might be approachable for a compromise.

But remember, this was before the meeting, and she also said that the backstop was going nowhere unless there was a viable solution.

So, no real change.

And yet most of the right leaning papers lead with this potential "breakthrough", when its nothing like that at all.

In fact, Johnson admitted that it was on the UK to find a solution. A solution that has so far eluded both the UK and EU for three years now, Johnson has a month to find.

And it is finding a solution to the impossible, in a month, that makes the Brexiteers squeal like a stuck pig. Or a herd of stuck pigs.

And today, Johnson is in Paris.

One suspects that both Merkel and Macron will have agreed a position beforehand, so the message will be the same:

"come up with something, but the clock is ticking."
