Crisis, what crisis?

Back in November, the American news media was all over a story about a "caravan" that was heading for the border, and each day that the midterms got nearer, the news got ever daker. Until the actual day of the vote when the story pretty much disappeared. Not to be heard of again.

The news cycle moved on, the story has (partially) done its job into scaring god fearing white fold of the brown-skinned apocalypse into voting for Trump. Or not.

And so over Christmas there appeared a story over here, about more brown-skinned immigrants crossing the Channel in paddling pools, bathtubs and so on. Something near 40, a veritable Army of dangerous immigrants either landed on the sacred beaches of East Kent or were intercepted as they have for years in the Channel by the coastguard and the Navy.

We live, if not in sight of the Channel, but a half hour walk away, we can see the cliff edge from our house, in other words we are on the front line. We hear helicopters a few times, one flew over our house. Could have been to rescue walkers who had got into trouble on the cliffs, or immigrants in danger or drowning.

Whatevs.

So, 40 desperate people were intercepted either at sea on on the beach, and since New Year's Day when two traffickers were caught, there had been nothing. All the main newspapers ran with it, as did the BBC at every bulletin. We even had the Home Secretary in Dover yesterday (nice of a minister to come to Dover, BTW), and he suggested that international law might be denied the refugees and asylum denied even if the claim was made properly "to teach others a lesson". That he is descended from immigrants himself makes it all the worse.

I can tell you there was no panic here in East Kent. We went to Deal and bought cheese. Stinky French cheese at that. Life went on.

If the UK leave the EU then the current agreement where the refugees are sent back to the EU country they left from will cease to apply, unless it can be replicated, and any refugees, immigrants that arrive here will have to stay here, unless the UK decides to send them back to their home country where there is likely a war raging. NOt a good look for the "Mother of all Democracies".

The UK leaves the EU is 12 weeks and one day. 85 days. The DUP are demanding that May renegotiate the Irish backstop as its not needed (it is). May's claim that talks have been ongoing were today denied by Junker in stating that there have been no talks, as there is nothing to talk about, there is a deal. And next week there should be the restart of the Commons debate about the WA and TA and then the "meaningful vote". Unless May delays it again.

Time is running out. Reality is here. There is nowhere to run, there is no road that the can can be kicked down. It is now or never, the time for brave men and women who were elected to do a job, do actually do their job and decide, upon looking at the facts, decide what is best for UK. We are here because they abdicated their duty, fail now then UK will be forever diminished.
