Brexit regret

In a poll today in The Times, 51% of UK citizens regret leaving the EU, while 38% still think its a good idea.

All areas of the UK now have a majority expressing regret, though in the south east, its close.

But with this level of regret, the UK Government presses on with the most extreme versions of Brexit possible.

Remain is now in the past tense, as the UK politically left the EU at the end of January 2020, and economic Brexit happens in 6 weeks.

No matter what.

There is no rejoining, at least for a generation.

However, whatever the situation is on January 1st 2021 is not forever.

The bigger the clusterfuck, the quicker both sides will move to fix it.

The transition can be renamed.

If there is a deal, and it includes things that are not a pure EU competancy, then it is classed as a mixed deal, and will have to be ratified by all EU27 Parliaments as well as some regional ones. This will not be done before the end of the year. In fact, it would probably take over 12 months, so if such a deal were to be struck, the first act would be to have a further transition period.

Who knew?

I can see the edge of England from the back of our house, whch just happens to be the closest point to mainland Europe. That fact is never going to change. Neither is the fact we, as a country, wants to and needs to trade with Europe, there might be pain, but common sense and economic necessity means that will will grow close once again. The EU might not ever have us back as a full member, but they might allow us to be an associate member.

Maybe, maybe not.

But the dream of Brexiteers of leaving all EU institutions by the end of the year, and their desperation to get that might mean that, in the long term, it will fail.

I am looking at the long term now, there will be short term chaos, but in the long term, reality will win out.

I love my country, and its people, even the Brexiteer headbangers, and want to see none suffer or get poorer, so I am beyond sad that my country is doing this to itself, my fight has been born out of a love for my Motherland. And truth and reality.

Sadly, Brexit will cause so much damage, so much hurt.

We did warn you. I warned you.
