Enshrine it in law

In order to emphasise how serious a PM takes an issue, and how it has to be done, both May and Jonson promised to enshrine the issue in law to make sure it happened.

But no Parliament can constrain a future one, as one Parliament can make a law, another can repeal or amend it.

May tried it with the original exit date of 29th March 2019, and that had to be amended, twice, as circumstances changed.

That many of Fleet Street's finest titles are screaming this today and apparently have forgotten previous broken promises and events thus enshrined, is disappointing. It plays well for the headline writers and the party faithful, but means Jack Shit.

I will not lose sleep over such a move.

Of course, the new intake of MPs might feel different, after having been selected promising to back Johnson's WAB, and then if that were to be subject to change, would they tow the party line? The the headbangers could take control, and nothing the PM or Government could do.

Latest policy to be enshrined in law is the giving of £34 billion to the NHS. NHS funding is a matter of Government policy, it needs no legal backing. Its underfunding has been an excuse for privatisation when the institution fails. Tories will see the NHS fail and privatise it.
